Nunhems Intense tomatoes find their way to the British supermarkets

The award-winning Intense tomato of Nunhems has gone on sale in the UK, with the retailer hailing it as "the best thing since sliced bread".
UK supermarket chain Tesco has begun selling what are being billed as the world’s first non-leaking tomatoes.
The tomatoes went on sale at Tesco stores across the UK from April 27th.

Tesco tomato buyer Emma Pettitt said the arrival of the non-leaking tomato could well be heralded by British sandwich fans as the best thing to hit the sandwich world since sliced bread. "As one of the most universally used sandwich ingredients, the problem is one that affects millions of people every day in the UK," she explained. "Tomatoes are one of Britain’s most loved vegetables but unfortunately their juiciness sometimes means that by lunchtime our lovely salad sarnie resembles a piece of wet cardboard. From now on that will be a thing of the past."
According to Tesco, tests also showed that, when making a sandwich from a standard tomato, 8 per cent of its weight is lost after slicing it and a further 12 per cent of the moisture seeps into the bread only an hour later.
The performance of Intense is "significantly better", with less than 1 per cent moisture lost when the tomato is sliced and only 3 per cent soaking into the bread, even 12 hours after the sandwich is made.

Intense on a sandwich, a great combination

As well as their most obvious use in preserving the freshness of sandwiches the non-leaking tomatoes will also help in the preparation of salads and other favourite dishes such as pizza, spaghetti, salsa and lasagna, added Tesco’s Emma Pettitt: “As we all know tomatoes can be tricky to chop and a squirt of juice can easily end up on the kitchen wall or over your shirt.“ The non-leaking variety will stop that problem but without the tomato losing any of its taste.
“The new tomato is also economical as tests have shown that you need around 30 per cent less than regular varieties when making a sauce. “Finding innovative new products that suit the needs of our shoppers is very important to us and we think that this could revolutionise the sandwich world, "says Ms Pettitt.
